FOX INTERVIEW
Tell us about your bike setup.
I have 3 different setups. My hardtail w/ an 831, my slopestyle bike with a Float in the rear and an 831 in the front, and my DH bike with a 40 up front and a DHX in the rear. I'll be using the hardtail for Nitro Tour, the slopestyle bike for all the slope comps, and the big rig for filming and Rampage!
What else is in your garage?
I split all my toys between my shed and my Dad's garage … My Dad's garage has most of the bike stuff, motorcycle stuff, and my shifter cart hangin from the ceiling. The extra space in my shed ends up being filled up with surfboards, cruisers, a lawn mower and old guitar amps.
What's your training regimen?
At my parent's house we have a ramp into the swimmin' pool so I spend a lot of time in the off-season learning tricks into the deep end of that puppy. Thats good for dialing in new tricks, but the most important thing is that I spend a lot of time just riding my bike. Whether it be dirt jump sessions at post office, DH shuttles, or trail ride loops in the woods on my slope bike, its just good to be holdin' onto the grips. I'd like to say surfing is a good training to keep the shoulders strong and in the sockets, but really its just an excuse to surf a lot and write off surfboards on my taxes!
Any major injuries, and how did you recover?
Well, like I said, the shoulders pop outta the sockets all the time, but that's not that big of a deal. Other than that, I broke my collarbone twice last year, but those heal up fast!
What's your typical pre-race meal? Guilty pleasure?
If I'm on the West Coast, then its a BURRITO! But we hardly ever have contests on the west coast, so I eat whatever is put in front of me … I ain't picky. Every year before Crankworx finals, I go to Avalanche Pizza in the village and scarf a slice.
What is your pre-race OCD behavior?
I try not to do any of that BS cuz I could have a tendency to get outta control with it. If I let myself, I'll adjust my goggles ang gloves a gaziillion times to the point that its ridiculous, so I stop myself after the first adjustment. I always raise my arms above my head with the "too much metal for one hand" sign before I drop in. Gets me stokkkked!!
How do you determine which races to enter each year?
Well, this is the first year that we actually have a World tour, so it's good to check out the points system and see which contests are worth the most and hit those up. Fortunately, all of my favorite events are worth a lotta points!
What are some of your best memories?
My favorite memories are from travelling around in weird places with friends and goofin' around.
What motivated you to start competing?
I was jumpin' my bike, and then people started holding contests … So I started jumping my bike IN contests … woo!!
What separates you from other professional athletes?
If I'm standing next to another professional athlete, then nothing … But if not, then probably air and matter.
How does FOX Racing Shox contribute to your success?
I've been lucky enough to gather up a sponsor list of companies who all make the best products in their category. Having the best bikes with the best suspension makes it so I can do whatever I want on my bike without having to worry about being held back by equipment.
What would you be doing if you weren't a professional athlete?
I would not be filling out this bio right now, but I'd still be riding my bike, surfing, playing music, and eating burritos.
What's the best thing about being a professional athlete?
Riding my bike, surfing, playing music, eating burritos, and getting paid for it.
What other sports are you interested in?
Surfing, playing music, and eating burritos.
Any advice to the readers dreaming to turn pro?
Enjoy everything you're doing no matter what it is and don't worry about "turning pro." Set little goals for each day, accomplish them, and daydream about the big ones.
How many hours a week are you on Facebook?
zero point one
Are you a gamer? What are your favorite games?
I can't really play video games … I lose interest … Except for Rockband. That holds my attention the longest especially if I'm playing the drums.
What are your favorite magazines and websites?
Decline, Bike, Vitalmtb.com, thesensus.com … other than that, I'm a youtube addict. I use it to learn everything from guitar licks to bike tricks.
Favorite movie quote?
"I'm gonna put my nuts on your drumset."
Who is your hero?
My girlfriend, Bonee … she makes everything awesome and hilarious, and lets me be myself all the time … which for most people is far too much to ask.
