FOX INTERVIEW
FOX Racing Shox is there when “it” counts — what is “it” to you?
After losing my left leg in a snocross racing accident in December 2008, FOX Racing Shox had the perfect replacement part — a DHX AIR mountain bike shock — to build my new racing leg around. FOX Racing Shox is also there to absorb the big hit when I get excited and overshoot my landing on my CRF250!
Tell us about your bike setup.
MX Bike: 2010 CRF 250 (300cc big bore by "MAX Power") Kliktronic electric shifter and custom rotating footpeg. Snocross Sled: 2011 Ski-Doo XP RS 600R (Stock engine) custom foot stirrup to keep my foot in the right spot.
What else is in your garage?
Gary Fisher mountain bike; Trek Road bike; a lot of tools to build anything including my many custom prosthetic legs; 200s Honda three wheeler (many mods).
What's your training regimen?
Road or mountain bike 3 days a week, ride 2-3 days a week, and weight train 3 days a week.
Any major injuries, and how did you recover?
December 2008 I ejected off my sled while racing and landed stiff legged and hyper extended my knee, it tore it up so bad that it had to be amputated a few days later. Since the accident, I always looked forward and focused on getting better and challenging myself to do the things I did before. I designed and built my own riding leg with a FOX Racing Shox DHX AIR mountain bike shock in it that allows me to rip on the bike and sled "almost" as fast as before.
What's your typical pre-race meal? Guilty pleasure?
Breakfeast: yogurt and granola, banana, blueberry muffin, half of an energy drink and water.
What is your pre-race OCD behavior?
Pretty low key leading up to the race. When I'm on the gate I always visualize the first lap, Plan A and Plan B.
How do you determine which races to enter each year?
I choose the races that will give the best exposure to my sponsors and I, and also a couple races that I really enjoy riding at.
What are some of your best memories?
The best ones are from practicing with my teamates over the years for snocross and riding at a few private motocross tracks during the summer. Oh and the best one is winning the gold at the Summer X 16 (2010) Adaptive Super X, I think that one will stick for a long time.
What motivated you to get started racing?
I just wanted to be the fastest guy on any machine I rode.
What separates you from other professional athletes?
I never give up. Ever.
How does FOX Racing Shox contribute to your success?
The biggest way they contribute is by having the trickest lightweight shocks available that I use in my prosthetic knee and foot. Along with that they build the best handling and most adjustable bike and snowmobile suspension ever.
What would you be doing if you weren't a professional athlete?
I'd be a mad scientist building crazy things in my shop (oh ya, I do that already).
What's the best thing about being a professional athlete?
Getting to keep doing the thing that I love the most, riding MX and snocross. And also to see how far I can push myself on and off the track.
What other sports are you interested in?
Cycling, board sports, firearms, and anything else that gives you that rush right when your about to find the edge.
Any advice to the readers dreaming to turn pro?
Make it your #1 priority and put in the training time during the week so the weekend seems like a breeze. Occasionally stop and enjoy the other things in life besides racing.
How many hours a week are you on Facebook?
Around an hour at the very most.
What are your favorite magazines and websites?
Racer X
Favorite movie quote?
"Talk to me, Goose."
Who is your hero?
My good buddy, Launchin' Levi LaVallee. Because he's one heck of an athlete and he's always having a great time no matter what!
I love my wife Sara (of course I have to say that)
I want everything that's too expensive
I believe in the harder you work, the better the victory feels
