Scott Beaumont World Cup: Disaster Strikes at Fort William

06.06.11 Disaster strikes at Fort William. Just back from Fort William where we have had one of the worst weekends in my World Cup career.
The track had been completely re built in Fort William and I loved it. Good fun and loads of passing opportunities made practice a lot of fun. In qualifying my weekend started to go wrong. On a flyer of a run, my chain came off before the rocks and I was unable to pedal for half of the track. However, even with no chain I was only 2.7 seconds behind the fastest time. So the positives were that I was on pace and now just had to transfer that to the racing. Qualifying 32nd is a bad place to be as I had to race fastest qualifier Jared Graves in every race. Still not fazed by this I was looking forward to racing.
Come race time and I got through my first heat with Graves, fending off a tough challenge from RSP rider Jurg Meier. One of the toughest first heats in memory, so was happy getting through this.
Into my second round and I was up against Graves, Roger Rinderknecht and Jacob Riha (Worlds Bronze medallist 2009). A race worthy of being a World Cup final on another day! Rinderknecht took gate 1, I had 2, Graves in 3 and Riha in 4. I needed one of my best gates to stand a chance. In the gate I loaded my legs up and shot out of the gate level with those around me, but................ unfortunately clipped out of my pedal on my 2nd stroke and right there my race was over. I got clipped back in and chased hard, but up against 3 of the worlds fastest riders, I just could not get close enough.
The end result was 31st which is just crap!
Anyway, we are packed and heading off to the next round this afternoon. Leogang in Austria is the venue for round 3 where I will be hoping to get back to winning ways.
I will be in Leogang for 2 weeks as the week after the World Cup we have the fourth round of the Schwalbe Euro 4X Series.
Hopefully we will have good internet over there and I will be able to update you with the news.
As always you can watch the race live on Freecaster on Saturday.
The weekend was not an entire disaster. I worked closely with the BBC all weekend for their coverage of the 4X event. I did an in depth interview about 4X and the race in Fort William, a helmet camera run with a microphone in my helmet so I could describe the course as I rode it.
Also we had a great poster signing session with the guys at Fox Europe with Fox pro riders Marc Beaumont, Josh Bryceland, Steve Smith and myself on the stand for 30 minutes on Saturday.
Photos attached for your use. Please credit Charles Robertson if you use them on your websites. They are free of charge, but please credit him. Photos show me on the rock section, the big double on the second straight and signing posters on the Fox stand.
