FOX Shakes Things Up at Annual Soccer Tournament
07.30.13 Ten FOX employees joined forces on Saturday, July 27th to battle other Bay Area businesses in an annual charity soccer tournament hosted by Major League Soccers San Jose Earthquakes. The FOX team had representatives from three offices - Manufacturing in Watsonville, Scotts Valley machine shop and, Scotts Valley corporate office. FOX was pitted against 19 teams hoping to bring home the annual Corporate Cup Title in the Mens Corporate division. Games lasted 30 minutes and were played on a small field with four field players and a Goal Keeper.
Game one was a challenging start against a strong Ebay (2nd) team. The FOX crew had only practiced briefly together a couple times prior to the tournament and worked out the kinks in this first match. It was a close game, with a number of opportunities on both sides, but ended in a 1:1 tie. The FOX team set their sights on game #2 against a solid Shutterfly (2nd) team. FOX came out firing to easily beat Shutterfly 4:1. The last game of group play was against Barry Swenson. The FOX team really hit their stride in this match shutting out the competition 5:0. With a 2/1/0 record FOX advanced to semi-final play as the top seed from their group and one of eight teams remaining in the fight for the title.
FOX faced a tough Ebay (1st) team for their first game of semi-final play. The game was close, but the long day got the best of the crew, and FOX lost their first game in this single elimination round. Their journey was over. While the team was disappointed to not go all the way, tournament organizers acknowledged that it was rare for a first year team to advance beyond group play let alone win their bracket.
At the end of the day, the FOX crew had a lot to be proud of for their first appearance in the tournament. More importantly, they left the experience with new friendships and their eyes on next year!
