Cameron Steele Takes First Career Pro-Lite Win
Steele Gets Tops Podium at Glen Helen
08.09.11 Starting from the pole position, Stronghold Motorsports Cameron Steele quickly distanced himself from the field and never looked back capturing his first career ProLite truck win in Round 10 of the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series at Glen Helen Raceway. It was an emotional victory for the 2011 ProBuggy champion who has faced adversity both on and off the track in recent months. For the affable Steele, known for his exploits on two and four wheels as he is a media personality, this season's impressive debut in the class has been tempered by a ProLite field that at times has appeared to be fixated on whatever tactics were necessary to block his path to the podium. Saturday's Round 9 racing action witnessed Steele once again being denied a trophy. While maintaining the second spot on the track and contending for the lead, Steele and another driver made contact, knocking him out of contention.
After recovering with a fourth place finish the previous evening, Sunday night's Round 10 found Steel on the front row seeking redemption. This time out, he was not to be denied as he held off his challengers to take the win. For the popular Steele, the victory was bitter sweet as he has been deeply affected by the tragic loss of his close friend, off road and freestyle motorcycle star, Jeff "Ox" Kargola. "It's hard not having Ox here like I'd like him to be," said Steele, overcome with emotion. "But I race with a team that is like a family...my family. This team has been behind me with their support while giving me an opportunity to race during these challenging times. I'm superstoked to be here and have this win with these guys."
Steele's Pro 2 teammates, Jeremy McGrath and Rob Naughton, were in the thick of the action throughout the weekend while the ensuing melee that took place each evening forced them to fight furiously for every position on the track. After starting Round 9 on the front row, Naughton found himself in a dogfight to contend with the leaders. While holding onto the third spot late in the race, his truck was spun during a midair collision with another vehicle, ripping away his shot at taking home the hardware. McGrath, who had been fighting his way through field, combated his share of high intensity racing contact, driving his way to a fifth place finish. Sunday, the free for all continued as the Pro 2 field was eager to perform for the final night under the lights at Glen Helen Raceway. Naughton overcame a midrace flat tire and worked his way back through the field to capture seventh while McGrath recovered from a pair of early spinouts to take the sixth spot.
Brandon Bailey had an impressive run during Round 9 ProBuggy action on Saturday. While on pace with the class leaders, he suffered a mechanical failure, denying him the opportunity to challenge for the podium. Sunday, Bailey was again bitten by mechanical gremlins but was able to complete the race and take a seventh place finish.
