How does FOX contribute to your success?
FOX gives me the function and performance I need to win. On race day I need the best tools that are going to get me to the finish reliably and at the front.
Tell us about your best race or event and how it changed you.
I have had a lot of great races including multiple national championships, national wins, world cup win, world championships but I hope none of them have changed me much. I enjoy the journey along the way and hope the success hasn't changed me much.
Tell us about your bike/vehicle setup.
My favorite bike is the SCOTT Spark 29. I was lucky enough to work with FOX right from the start as I developed the bike and dialed in the suspension. The combination of the Factory Series 32 FLOAT 29 up front with the option of the Factory Series FLOAT RP23 or a FLOAT RPL in the rear gave me the perfect setup for anything from shredding trails at home in BC to the flat out pace of a World Cup.
What else is in your garage?
My garage is full of miscellaneous bike/outdoor gear, a his/hers Audi, and a bunch of animal gear (my wife runs Tickled Pink Weimaraner Rescue).
What's your training regimen?
I try to train as smart as possible and plan B is to just giv'r.
Any major injuries, and how did you recover?
No broken bones but several scars from some unintended impacts.
What's your typical pre-race/event meal? Guilty pleasure?
The first part of my pre-race meal is making sure I have a good cup of coffee; I usually travel with my own gear and some good beans from someone like 49th Parallel. For food, my favorite pre-race meal is some Dorset cereal muesli with some milk and yogurt along with a few eggs.
How do you determine which races or events to enter each year?
The focus of Maxxis-Rocky Mountain is the World Cups. After we fit those in along with the National Championships we see what else makes sense as far as domestic racing goes. We try to fit in some of the US racing and then look at what is going on when we are hanging out in Europe in between World Cups.
What motivated you to get started professionally?
I never planned on racing professionally but I knew I loved riding a mountain bike. I feel really fortunate I was able to turn it into a career and hope to do it as long as I can.
What separates you from other professional athletes?
You can recognize me out of my spandex because I have sideburns.
What would you be doing if you weren't a professional athlete?
Possibly using my mechanical engineering degree to do some R&D work or maybe do something on the physiological assessment side of things.
What's the best thing about being a professional athlete?
No alarm and not being on a fixed 9-5 schedule.
What other sports are you interested in?
In the winter I like to get in some Nordic and Alpine Touring. I am a big sports fan and enjoy watching hockey, Formula 1, motocross, and almost everything else.
Any advice to the readers dreaming to turn pro?
It takes a long time so make sure you are having fun, try to continually learn about everything related to being an athlete, and never start to think you are good.
What are your favorite magazines and websites?
I spend a lot of time on the couch recovering so I check up on just about everything on the Internet.
Favorite movie quote?
"I'll give you a come'r and a give'r, and then I'll come and give it, come and give it for to come and give'r, give'r, deaner, give'r" - Dean Murdoch
Who is your hero?
Dean Murdoch - He overcame nut cancer.
Are you a Mac or PC? Mac
Top 3 bands Stars, Caribou, and Wintersleep are a few of my favorites.
