Just as our Racing Applications Development (RAD) program often has products that never make it to production, some of our FOX Open Projects may not graduate into the release phase. Open Project is a way for us to share a rough concept, or develop an idea visually, to decide if the project should move on to a proper product development process or get sent to the chopping block.

REPLACE A RIGID GRAVEL GRINDER
FORK WITH A 32 STEP-CAST AX

The idea came to a few people internally and they made it happen by having the air spring modified down to 40 mm. The enjoyment they found riding it and the positive reactions by others that saw it in the wild got around the office and we decided to delve further into the possibilities.

It was too late to go to the drawing board and design a purpose-built gravel grinder fork in time for our model year 2018 product line release, but we certainly had the time to tune and refine it for the task.

While we're not sure of all of the frames/sizes this iteration will be compatible with, we decided to open this project up to the public willing to live on the cutting edge of early adoption.

32 STEP-CAST AX — Explore the lesser-travelled route, rally loose descents, and brave the elements with the new Adventure Cross (AX) fork, featuring a short-travel specific FLOAT EVOL air spring.

The FIT 4 damper features three on-the-fly settings —Open, Medium, and Firm— making the AX adjustable for any adventure you find yourself on, planned or not. A lightweight 32 Step-Cast chassis with lockout means you'll still get great power transfer on those long stretches of fire road and pavement. With 40 mm of travel, you'll have predictable cornering and descending when the route gets rough.

INCUBATOR | SHORT TRAVEL TRANSFER POST

With one exception so far, none of us can run the post at its full travel, so we had a few internals cut down for those of us that can run a 31.6 or 30.9 post on our gravel bikes.

The internals of a 100 mm post were hacked down to have a total drop of only 55 mm, actuated by the front Shimano shifter (which was also modified to active our seatpost properly.)

PIVOT VAULT PROJECT BIKE

1. Modified Shimano lever to properly activate seatpost

2. Cable direction inverted, barrel cable clamp was needed.
Aluminum bottom cap slightly cut to fit new hardware.

3. Inline barrel adjuster for post (only way to get cable tension on the post with the custom configuration of the shifter and post)

4. 5 mm crown race to add extra frame clearance of top cap knobs

5. Wolf Tooth pulley - fixes ratio from road shifter to mountain derailleur cable pull.

6. Race team paint and graphics (not available for purchase.)

The modifications made to our project bike are for our internal testing purposes only, and should not be tried at home. We do not advocate modifying product beyond its intended use.
